Cold air tightens the skin’s pores and reduces blood circulation. This reduces the naturally occurring oil known as sebum, which acts as a protective layer and traps moisture next to the skin. With humidity in the air lower during winter, the cumulative effect is that skin starts to dry out. Combine that with the glare and UV factor of the sun reflected off the snow and you are in for some serious skincare challenges. Here’s what you can do to prep your skin and support during your time on the slopes.
Hydrate it – a serum containing hyaluronic acid is like a BIG drink of water for your skin. It is able to hold up to 1,000 times its molecular weight in water. Hyaluronic acid penetrates the skin and binds water to skin cells, infusing all layers of the skin with valuable, rejuvenating moisture. Try one from Babor, Bioelements, or Synergie Use the serum for at least a week before you hit the snow, and morning and night during your time away.
Protect it – sunscreen is a total essential. BUT don’t just apply it in the morning – pack it in your jacket pocket and reapply every 2 hours. If you are wearing ski goggles or sunglasses be aware that every time your remove them you are rubbing off a little of your protection so be extra vigilant there. We love the easy dispensing airless pump of Synergie or easy to transport tube protection by COOLA – or the tinted version COOLA Rosilliance for coverage and protection. Don’t forget your lips with a nourish SPF such as this one from COOLA
Nourish it – a richer cream helps provide extra nourishment for the skin morning and night. We love Babor Hyaluron for extra hydration with triple strength peptides and hyaluronic acid or Synergie Hydrock. At night your skin repairs and you can help support and nourish it. The Organic Nation Super 8 Recovery Oil aids recovery, and to nourish choose Bioelements Sleepwear with topical calcium, or Synergie Reclaim.
Support – tired achy muscles can sometimes be supported with a magnesium supplement, and nothing beats a soak in a hot tub with a cup of magnesium/epsom salts. Make sure you pack a bag (available from supermarkets). Remember to drink plenty of water during the day to keep your skin hydrated internally, and too many teas and coffees will dehyrate your skin so be mindful. When you’re having a hot shower keep your face out of the direct stream of wateras hot temperatures can cause broken capillaries (those tiny red veins). If you can find an infra-red sauna nearby, we highly recommend a post-ski session to help with aches and pains. If you did catch too many rays, help repair with COOLA After Sun Radical Recovery
Have a great time!
